Food waste - scary figures

Last week was the 15th National Recycling Week and one of the main focuses during that time was encouraging people to reduce waste and both help the environment and ease finances.

I came across a great website - www.Foodwise.com.au

It has a terrific section about Food Facts, the following are some that should make us all stop and realise that recycling is not just an option, it is an imperative for us all and especially food businesses;

- In Sydney a recent study has shown that of the 11kg in the average bin, 5.8kg of it are compostable materials and 95% of that is food.

- The Australian Institute has a study that shows that in this country we thrown away $5.2 billion  in food each year - that is around $616 per household.

- Based on CSIRO data, 1 kg of potato uses 500L, 1kg of white rice uses 1550L and 1kg of beef uses 50 000L. All this water is wasted when we throw the food out.

- Australians throw out around 3 million tonnes of food a year - that means about 136kg per person per year.

If you are not recycling, why not?
