I found the following ten tips for being green easily at a great website - www.neerg.com - well worth having a look at. Although written in the US, the tips apply everywhere. 1. Support local farmers We love this one! Buying locally grown natural products is an energy efficient way to help the environment by reducing the amount of fossil fuel required to transport produce to market. Locally grown natural products are also fresh and delicious! 2. Print on both sides We’re trusting that you can calculate how much paper will be saved by picking up this green office habit. Want to be an even bigger eco-rock star? Buy green paper products on neerg (even some made from elephant dung!). 3. Switch from conventional detergents to natural soap Plant-based, biodegradable detergents are easy on your clothes and your conscience. Many natural products also work great in cooler water temperatures, which saves cash on your water heating bill. 4. Air dry your laundry Opting for a clothesline eliminates the need for an energy-guzzling dryer, which helps clothes last longer and can save you hundreds of dollars yearly on your energy bill. 5. No more bottled water! Trendy, eco-friendly, and healthy too! What’s not to love about reusable, eco-friendly water bottles! The chemical BPA, which is found in disposable water bottles, may affect a woman’s fertility and increase your risk of cancer. Eco-friendly water bottles also make great green gifts! 6. Away with pesky junk mail Are you thrilled when you get coupons in the mail? How about election pamphlets? Us neither. Sorting through junk mail is a waste of your time, as well as the forest products and energy used in its production. There is a cure! For just $1, you can stop receiving 75% of unsolicited junk mail by registering for the Mail Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Association Website. 7. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) According to The Daily Green, 12.5 million barrels of oil were used to make the 88.5 billion plastic bags consumed by Americans last year. Reusable, environmentally friendly bags made from organic cotton or nylon are easier to carry and less wasteful than their paper and plastic counterparts. 8. Check your tires 1/4 of the tires in America are flat! According to The Daily Green, we could save 2.8 billion gallons of gas each year if our tires were properly inflated. By routinely checking your tire pressure, you can keep more cash in your wallet and less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 9. Buy recycled toilet paper Who knew TP could be such a bum-mer? According to MSN: If every household in the United States bought just one four-pack of 260-sheet recycled bath tissue, instead of the typical tissue made from virgin fiber, it would eliminate 60,600 pounds of chlorine pollution, preserve 356 million gallons (1.35 billion liters) of fresh water and save nearly 1 million trees. That kind of waste is truly yucky. 10. Do full dishwasher loads Running a full dishwasher uses 1/3 less water than washing dishes by hand–just scrape off the big pieces of food (preferably into your compost) and let your dishwasher handle the rest!
