Huge Salmonella recall in US

36 million pounds (more than 16 300 tonnes) of ground turkey is now the third largest meat recall in US history and the largest Class 1 Recall to date.

It has been found to be potentially contaminated with Salmonella heidelberg, a pathogen with antibiotic resistant properties.

There have been 80 cases across 26 states to date, and one death attributed to the outbreak.

People with food poisoning from one of the 2500 Salmonella species can have symptoms from upset stomach, fever, and diarrhoea. Although most healthy people will recover without hospitalisation, those at high risk may suffer badly and potentially have long term conditions or even death.

Proper handling of foods by keeping them clean, cold andhot (when needed) will go a lon way to preventing food poisoning. The message of the Food Safety Information Council of Cook, Clean, Chill and Separate is the key to ensuring that food is safe.

I can assist food business with their food safety controls and programs through support, products and training. Contact me at anyi@howsafeisyourfood.com.au to find out more.
