Aussie applegrowers fight back

In 2010 the World Trade organisation (WTO) found that the Australian biosecurity and quarantine standards  for imported apples were a breach to the WTO rules. These standards had been developed and implemented to protect our home grown apple industry and fruit.

As a result, apples can now be imported and sold in this country for the first time in 90 years. The first load arrived in January 2011 and more are expected as more countires export into Australia.

It has been found in various historical studies that Australians would prefer to purchase Australian produce if given the opportunity. Therefore apple growers across the country will be using an "Aussie Apples" sticker to give customer the choice. The sticker system has been designed and implemented by Horticulture Australia Limited

John Lawrenson, Apple and Pear Australia Limited Chairman said, “Our favourable growing environment, healthy soil and the wonderful Australian sun, all contribute to producing some of the highest quality produce in the world. The new stickers offer shoppers reassurance that they are buying Aussie apples and by doing so supporting local growers, their families and regional communities across Australia.”
