| New egg safety law in US |
|
Effective 09 July 2010, all US egg producers with more then 50 000 birds are required to meet the new egg safety regulations from the Food and Drug Administration. This group amount to about 80percent of egg production in the US. Smaller producers are allowed until 2012 to meet the requirements. The new regulation requires the use of refrigeration and preventative measures. The Australian equivalent is undergoing the final steps before submission to the Ministerial Council for approval. It is expected that as there has been much preparation work done, that our requirements will come into effect as of September 2011. Along with similar measures to the US, one of our requirements will be the stamping of eggs to aid with traceability. There will be a strong consumer information campaign by Food Standards Australia New Zealand with a focus on stamped eggs being good eggs. |
